Delivery Fit Guide

Measuring for Successful Delivery

Make sure your new furniture fits through the door and into the room. Check these key measurements and tips before you order.

Before you order

Avoid these common delivery issues

Most failed deliveries come down to the same few problems. A few minutes with a tape measure helps avoid all of them.

  • Narrow doorways
    Issue #1

    Narrow doorways

The item is wider or taller than the front door or room entrance.

  • Tight corners
    Issue #2

    Tight corners

Hallways and landings are too narrow to turn the item.

  • Stairs
    Issue #3

    Stairs

Low ceilings, banisters or turns on the stairs block the way.

  • Small lifts
    Issue #4

    Small lifts

The item is too long, wide or tall for the lift.

  • Outside access
    Issue #5

    Outside access

Gates, fences, steps or parking make it hard to reach the door.

Sofas, chairs & ottomans

How we measure upholstery

Furniture dimensions are taken from the highest, deepest and widest points of the item, including any overhangs, angles, curves and arms.

  • Measuring the height and depth of a sofa

    Height / Depth

Height is measured from the floor to the highest point. Depth runs from the front of the seat to the back of the frame.

  • Measuring the width of a sofa

    Width

Width is measured from the outside of one arm to the outside of the other, at the widest point.

  • Measuring the diagonal depth of a sofa

    Diagonal

The diagonal depth is measured from the top of the back to the front edge of the seat. This is usually the measurement that decides whether a sofa will fit through a door when tilted.

Cabinets, dressers & tables

How we measure casegoods

Furniture dimensions are taken from the highest, deepest and widest points of the item, including any overhangs, angles, curves and handles.

  • Measuring the depth and width of a cabinet

    Depth / Width

Width is measured from side to side at the widest point. Depth runs from the front (including handles or overhanging tops) to the back.

  • Measuring the height and diagonal of a cabinet

    Height / Diagonal

Height is measured from the floor to the top. For tall pieces, check the diagonal too – you’ll need it to stand the item upright in a room with a standard ceiling.

On delivery day

How we deliver

We aim to deliver every item to your chosen room with care. These are the points along the way where measurements matter most.

  • Doors and entries

    Doors / Entries

Items are carried through upright, on their side or at an angle, depending on the door size.

  • Delivering furniture through a narrow passage

    Narrow passages

Larger pieces need room to pivot through tight spaces and turns.

  • Delivering furniture in a lift

    Lifts

Long items may need to stand on end, so the lift’s height and diagonal matter.

  • Carrying furniture up the stairs

    Stairs

Items are tilted to clear the ceiling and the turns on the stairs.

  • Hallways

    Hallways

Corners into rooms are often the tightest point on the route.

How to measure your space

Comparing your item’s dimensions with the spaces along the delivery route is the best way to make sure our team can get it into place. These are the key measurements to take.

  • Doors and entries

    Doors / Entries

Measure the height, and the width between the door frame and any door stop, with the door fully open.

  • Hallways

    Hallways

Measure the width and the ceiling height, and note any corners or doorways off the hall.

  • Measuring outside paths and gates

    Pathways

Check paths, gates and passageways outside, along with any steps up to the door.

  • Measuring a lift

    Lifts

Measure the door opening, interior width, depth and height, and the diagonal from floor to ceiling.

  • Measuring a staircase

    Stairs

Measure the width and the lowest ceiling point above the stairs, and note any turns, landings or banisters.

  • Measuring ceiling height

    Ceilings

Measure the ceiling height in the room, and watch for beams, sloping ceilings and low light fittings.

Large items

What is the 224 cm (88") rule?

An item about 224 cm (88") wide has a diagonal of roughly 244 cm (96"). That is about the height of a standard UK ceiling (around 2.4 m).

For anything wider than 224 cm, please check the whole delivery route carefully to make sure the item can pass through and be stood upright in the room.

Checklist

Tips for a successful delivery

  1. Check every dimension of your item, including the diagonal.
  2. Walk the delivery route and measure passages, stairs and turns to make sure the item can get through.
  3. Check ceiling heights along the route, especially for items more than 224 cm (88") wide.
  4. Look up for low light fittings, beams and porch or roof overhangs.
  5. Allow for banisters, handrails and half-walls inside, and fences, gates or railings outside.
  6. Measure the lift if you live in a flat: door opening, interior size and ceiling height.
  7. Plan parking for the delivery van close to your door, and arrange any permits for restricted parking.
  8. Clear the way before we arrive, removing doors from their hinges if extra space is needed.
